Long-tailed Paradigalla Female |
The Long-tailed Paradigalla is a medium sized bird of paradise. The
scientific name of Long-tailed Paradigalla is Paradigalla carunculata. Paradigalla is a combination of two latin
words “Paradisaea and Gallus” which means jungle fowl, and Carunculata is also latin word which means small piece of flesh. One of the most simple and least known

Behaviour:
The Long-tailed
Paradigalla is sexually monomorphic. The adult male is about 37 cm in length,
and adult female is approximately 35 cm long. It is the black bird of paradise with lengthy and sharp tail. It is
only adorned because of the colorful yellow,
red and skyblue facial sticks
near bottom of the beak. Both
sexes are almost same, only female is inconsiderable dark and
smaller. It is presumed that the Long-tailed Paradigalla is polygynous like
Short-tailed Paradigalla. Males are uninhabited. The courtship display and
breeding of Long-tailed Paradigalla is not known yet. Adult females build and
attend their nests alone. They mostly hybridise with Western Parotia. Superb
Bird of Paradise and Black Sicklebill.

Range & Threat:
The Long-tailed
Paradigalla is endemic Mid mountain forests between 1400 to 2100
meters, Arfak Mountains, possibly in Fakfak Mountains, Vogelkop and Onin Peninsula, West Papua of Indonesia.
The Long-tailed Paradigalla is estimated as near threatened on the International Union for Conservation Nature
Red List of Endangered Species.
It is listed on Appendix II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered
Species.
